Internet - Student Usage

The Internet is a valuable instructional tool to assist our students in accessing primary resources from around the world. The Internet will enable our students to develop their skills in order to access and use information effectively, apply technology competently, and to think critically and creative as they solve problems both independently and cooperatively, all expectations are identified in the Design for Learning.

All students of the District have access to the Internet through dependent usage with guidance by their classroom teachers. The teachers provide a "road map" for students on the information highway, identifying specific sites at which the students may visit to obtain information to achieve identified outcomes of specific class units.

For students to be independent users of the Internet, the students and the parents of students who are minors must take part in an orientation to become aware of the District's expectations and plans for the use of the Internet. Employees seeking independent use must also complete the orientation.

As students are granted the added privilege of using the Internet independently, they also must realize that only appropriate uses are permitted so as to not jeopardize the cancellation of the privilege.

Students who access restricted items or communicate in a manner prohibited by the school discipline policy will be subject to the following consequences. Because the nature of each violation may vary, the building administration is given latitude in determining the appropriate consequences.

First Offense: Up to three- (3) weeks loss of Internet access. Additional disciplinary action may be imposed consistent with existing disciplinary practices regarding inappropriate language or behavior. Written notification of this loss of access will be given to the parent(s)/guardian(s), the student, and the director of technology.
Second Offense: Up to six- (6) weeks loss of Internet access. Additional disciplinary action may be imposed consistent with existing disciplinary practices regarding inappropriate language or behavior. Written notification of this loss of access will be given to the parent(s) or guardian(s), the student, and the director of technology.
Third Offense: A third violation of Internet access will result in a minimum of eighteen (18) weeks loss of Internet access and consideration for permanent loss of access privileges. Additional disciplinary action may be imposed consistent with existing practice regarding inappropriate language or behavior. Written notification of this loss of access will be given to the parent(s)/guardian(s), the student, and the director of technology.

In all offenses, when applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved.
