508 – Attendance Requirements
Compulsory Attendance. Parents and guardians who have children over age six and under age sixteen by September 15, shall have the children attend the District at the attendance center designated by the District or shall comply with Code 625 and the laws of the State of Iowa. If a child reaches the age of sixteen on or after September 15, the child shall be subject to the provisions of this paragraph until the end of the regular school year. In addition, a parent or guardian who has enrolled a child age five in kindergarten shall be subject to the requirements of this paragraph unless the parent or guardian notifies the District in writing of his or her intent to withdraw the child from school. Students not attending a minimum of 175 days without proper excuse shall be referred to the County Attorney (or other plan for attendance shall be agreed to with the student).
Beliefs. Students are expected to attend classes regularly and to be on time in order for them to receive the maximum benefits from the educational program, to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline and responsibility, and to assist in minimizing disruptions to the educational environment. It is the Board of Director’s belief that students who have regular and responsible attendance are more likely to enjoy school to a greater degree and to benefit more fully from the educational program.
Responsibility. It shall be the responsibility of the students and their parents and guardians to cause students to attend school regularly and in accordance with this policy and with administrative rules and regulations.
Attendance for Entire Time. The Board of Directors requires attendance of all regularly enrolled students for the entire time when schools are in session during the regular school year, which shall be at least 180 days each school year, provided that students may be excused from attendance pursuant to policies and rules of the Board and the administration.
Excused Absences. Students may be excused from attendance for reasons of personal illness, death or illness in the student’s family, medical and business appointments which cannot be scheduled outside of school hours, and for other reasons which can be justified from an educational standpoint and for which approval is given by the student’s parents or guardians and by the administration. Parents and guardians shall verify parental consent to the absence in writing or by telephone.
Unexcused Absences. Any absences from school or a class which are not approved by both the parents or guardians and by the administration shall be treated as unexcused absences, and the student shall be subject to discipline.
Make-Up Work. All work missed due to absences, excused or unexcused, shall be made up with credit. A reasonable date for make-up work will be determined by the teacher. If the work is not completed in a timely fashion, the student will receive a “0” for the work.
Punctuality. Students are expected to be in classes and activities on time.
