602 – Equal Educational Opportunities
Nondiscrimination. It is the policy of the Urbandale Community School District not to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, religion, socio-economic background, age, political party affiliation, or actual or potential parental, family or marital status in its programs, activities, or employment practices as required by the applicable federal and state laws. The policy of the District shall be to provide educational programs and opportunities for students as needed on the basis of individual interests, values, abilities and potential. No otherwise qualified person will be excluded from educational activities on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or family status. Furthermore, the District affirms the right of all students to be treated with the respect and to be protected from intimidation, discrimination, physical harm, and harassment based on these protected characteristics.
Free Appropriate Public Education. It is the policy of the District to provide a free appropriate public education to each disabled student, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. It is the intent of the District to ensure that students who are disabled within the definition of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act or who are disabled within the definition of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or the Americans With Disabilities Act are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate educational services. Due process rights of disabled students and their parents will be enforced.
Inclusion. Inclusion of minority and disabled students shall occur throughout the District’s programs. In order to monitor compliance and progress, District, attendance center, and course enrollment data shall be collected on the basis of race, national origin, sex and disability.
Inquiries/Compliance Officer. Inquiries regarding compliance with equal educational opportunities shall be directed to the District’s Coordinator of Student Services who shall be the District’s compliance officer (515-457-5000). Inquiries regarding compliance with equal educational opportunities for disabled students shall be directed to the District’s 504/ADA Coordinator who shall be appointed by the Board of Directors. Students and parents or guardians with complaints alleging a violation of this policy should refer to the complaint procedure described in Policy 545.
