Dan Davis Named Character Counts Coach Of The YearCreated on March 10th, 2015
The CHARACTER COUNTS! Coach of the Year Award honors a worthy recipient who embodies the Six Pillars of Character®: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring & Citizenship. Rather than spotlight winning records and isolated acts of heroism or generosity, the award was conceived to recognize individuals whose coaching lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to any or all of the following qualities associated with good character.
The 2015 recipient of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coach of the Year is Dan Davis of Urbandale. In recognition of this honor, a $1,000 cash award will be made in the name of the recipient to the Urbandale athletic department to further enhance character development initiatives. Davis was honored at the Girls State Basketball Tournament on March 6, 2015, at halftime of the Class 2A girls state title game.
Davis has taught and coached at Urbandale for the last 17 years. The Northern Iowa graduate has been the head girls cross country coach since 1999 and his teams have finished fifth or higher at the State Cross Country Meet five times, including two second-place finishes. He has coached 12 Elite All-Staters and has been named Class 4A Regional Coach of the Year 10 times. He has also coached track and field along with middle school basketball. Davis is in his first season as an assistant with the J-Hawk bowling teams.
“… Dan Davis ensures that each of the members of his team embrace the physical and mental challenges of the lifelong sport which he coaches,” states Urbandale Activities Director Bill Watson. “While his teams have competed at the highest of levels interscholastically, the life lessons which he imparts far exceed any time across four kilometers.”
