KCCI And EMC Select Webster Elementary For “Read With Me” Assembly Plus $1,000 Donation To Library

Congratulations to Webster Elementary for being selected by EMC Insurance and KCCI 8 News as the December 2017 “Read With Me” school. The Read With Me program is a partnership between EMC and KCCI. Each month, EMC donates $1,000 to an Iowa school for use in its library, and the winning school is featured on KCCI-TV.

Webster Instructional Coach, Olga Barnes, reached out to KCCI to inquire about the Read With Me program as part of Webster’s building goal of reading one million minutes. KCCI and EMC responded by selecting Webster and having Marcus McIntosh, KCCI News Reporter, read the book, “Creepy Carrots!” by Aaron Reynolds, during an all-school assembly on December 4, 2017. In addition, EMC donated $1,000 to the Webster library.

Webster preschool through fifth-grade students have logged just over 600,000 minutes to date as tracked by a creative and engaging hallway display. The students have also been encouraged along the way to reach their goal by Mayor Bob Andeweg and Urbandale Police Sgt. Chad Underwood at previous assemblies.

In Urbandale, we know that our pursuit of meaningful goals requires us to stretch and grow in order to achieve them. Receiving encouragement along the way continues to motivate and inspire us to press on when faced with challenges that will undoubtedly arise on our journey. Urbandale CSD would like to thank KCCI and EMC for selecting Webster Elementary as their Read With Me school for the month of December; we are grateful for the $1,000 donation to the Webster library. We also thank Mayor Andeweg and Sgt. Underwood for attending previous assemblies and encouraging students to persevere in pursuit of their goal. In addition, we thank our extraordinary Webster students, staff, and families for all of their time and dedication to reading and to encouraging students to read.

As Marcus McIntosh shared that he would return and read to students again if/when they meet their goal of one million minutes…we recommend Mr. McIntosh begin thinking about a book he would like to read as we are sure students will meet their goal! Bravo, Webster students, and press on!
