UHS Senior Writes Winning Entry In The Barnes & Nobel “My Favorite Teacher Contest”Created on April 20th, 2017
The compelling words of an Urbandale High School student captured the attention of the Barnes & Noble “My Favorite Teacher Contest” judges to such a degree, that they rose to the top of a large pool of entries resulting in top honors. The entry written by UHS Senior Sara Feldotto, about her English Teacher Kelli Oda-Lawler, was selected as the winning entry. An award ceremony took place on April 2, 2017, at the Jordan Creek Barnes & Noble store where Oda-Lawler received a special award acknowledging her achievement and Feldotto received a certificate of recognition.
To enter the national contest, students were invited to nominate their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems, or thank you letters that explained how their teacher influenced their life and revealed why they appreciated and admired him or her. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of expression and writing.
Barnes & Noble shared that there were many excellent entries, but Feldotto’s stood out due to her intense gratitude and sincerity for everything Oda-Lawler has done. Feldotto painted a picture through her compelling and heart-felt words that depicted Oda-Lawler’s deep commitment to her students.
Oda-Lawler will now be entered into the regional competition. Each regional winner will receive a NOOK and a $500 Barnes & Noble Gift Card. From the pool of regional winners, Barnes & Noble will name one teacher the Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year. The winning teacher will receive $5,000 and the title of Teacher of the Year. The winner will be recognized at a special community celebration at a local Barnes & Noble store. The winning teacher’s school will receive $5,000.
