Urbandale High School Student Wins State-Wide Iowa Juneteenth Essay ContestCreated on June 22nd, 2019
Congratulations to Urbandale High School student, Sydney Walljasper, for writing the winning essay in the state-wide Iowa Juneteenth Essay Contest. Sydney was recognized during the Iowa Juneteenth Community Builders Appreciation Banquet at Drake University on June 13, 2019. The reception, dinner, and program recognized community members and winners of the state-wide essay content. The keynote speaker was Mr. Louis Carr, President of Media Sales at BET (Black Entertainment Television).

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States of America. The Iowa Juneteenth Observance has been in existence for 29 years, and was founded by Gary Lawson in 1990. On April 11, 2002, the Iowa Juneteenth holiday was made an official holiday.
