Urbandale Middle School Teacher Receives 2017 Educator Of The Year AwardCreated on May 16th, 2017
On April 26, 2017, the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce presented the Educator of the Year Award to Urbandale Middle School (UMS) 6th Grade English Learners (EL) Teacher Alissa Morrison during a surprise presentation at an all-school assembly. Morrison has been teaching sixth-grade English learners at UMS for five years. Before coming to Urbandale, she substitute taught and also taught adult English as a Second Language at a language institute in California. Morrison attended the University of Northern Iowa where she received a BA in TESOL-Teaching (K-12) and a minor in music.
“As I was receiving the award, I couldn’t help but think about all of the other teachers who could have also won this award,” said Morrison. “My co-teachers and team that I work with in 6th grade, but also so many other teachers in our building and throughout our district are all deserving of the Teacher of the Year Award. I am very thankful to be surrounded by co-workers who I’m constantly learning from and who take the time to get to know each and every student. I am so fortunate to teach in my position. The students are kind, caring, and full of positive energy. I feel very lucky to be their teacher and to get to work with them as they learn and grow throughout their years at UMS. I am honored to accept this award.”
“I am so happy for Alissa in her recognition as Urbandale Chamber Educator of the Year,” said UMS Principal Loren DeKruyf. “She is a fantastic teacher and role model for our students. Alissa not only supports the EL students at UMS in their growth and learning, but also impacts the culture in our building in such a positive way. Congratulations, Alissa!”
The Urbandale Community School District congratulates Morrison on receiving the Urbandale Chamber 2017 Educator of the Year Award and is thankful for the dedication, compassion, and encouragement she brings to all of her students while instilling a love for learning. Students in Morrison’s class not only learn the content of their coursework, but learn how to embrace their own potential, set high-achieving goals, and believe in their abilities to achieve their dreams. Morrison is an exemplary educator and positively impacts students, colleagues, district, and our entire Urbandale community. Congratulations!
