Learn More About Becoming A UCSD School Board Candidate: Nomination Papers Due Sept 18

Every two years we hold School Board elections and this year Urbandale Community School District will have three open seats on the ballot. All three seats are four-year terms. School Board volunteers are highly valued leaders in our district as they are elected to represent what is best for students, families, and staff. Board members volunteer their time by attending, collaborating, and leading semi-monthly work sessions and board meetings that focus on developing effective policies, establishing efficient budgets, and advocating for high-quality public education that prepares students for success.

Interested in seeking a Board seat?

  • Review information about school elections provided by the Iowa Association of School Boards and the Iowa Secretary of State.
  • First day for candidates to file nomination papers with UCSD Board Secretary, Julie Mitchell, is Monday, August 25, 2025.
  • Candidate Filing Deadline: Nomination papers are due to UCSD Board Secretary Julie Mitchell by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
  • School Board Election Day is Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Polls open 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Learn more about absentee ballot and election day polling information by visiting the Polk County Auditor site.

Summary of 2025 School Board Election Dates

  • Aug. 25: First day to file nomination papers with the board secretary. 
  • Sept. 18: Last day to file nomination papers with the board secretary by 5:00 p.m. 
  • Sept. 23: Last day candidates may withdraw by filing a written request with the school board secretary by 5:00 p.m.
  • Nov. 4: Election Day; polls open 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Learn more about absentee ballot and election day polling information by visiting the Polk County Auditor site.
  • Nov. 10 or 12: Election canvass for school districts located within one county.
  • Nov 24: Organizational Meeting; board’s first regular or special meeting following the final canvass. During this meeting, the board organizes for the new term.
