Plan On Attending: Parent University February 21

Interested in learning more about potentially dangerous apps for children, Extended Learning Program, Illustrative Mathematics, social emotional learning, special education, and our multilingual neighbors? How about talking directly with the Superintendent and School Board members? Then plan on attending Parent University on February 21, 2023. All UCSD parents/guardians are welcome to attend these free sessions. No registration required.

TOPICS FOR FEBRUARY 21, 2023

  1. Safety & Security—Dangerous Apps (90 minutes): Participants will learn about apps that can be dangerous for children. This will be a double session with dedicated time to ask questions.
  2. Social Emotional Learning & Support—Elementary: Students with strong social emotional skills are better able to deal with everyday challenges. This session will define social emotional learning and introduce you to the 5 SEL domains through an elementary lens.
  3. Social Emotional Learning & Support—Secondary: Students with strong social emotional skills are better able to deal with everyday challenges. This session will define social emotional learning and introduce you to the 5 SEL domains through a secondary lens.
  4. Special Education 101: Special education supports and services are provided to ensure the academic, social, emotional, behavioral, adaptive, and physical needs of students are met.
  5. Extended Learning Programming: Extended Learning Program (ELP) aims to identify and provide support to students to ensure challenging and authentic learning. This session will provide a general overview of the ELP program along with information surrounding the program review.
  6. Get to Know K–5 Illustrative Mathematics: In this session participants will experience a math lesson from Illustrative Mathematics and parents will have the opportunity to learn “the why” behind problem-based instruction and a thinking classroom.
  7. School Board & Superintendent Listening Post: You are invited to join the Superintendent and two School Board members to discuss topics of interest. This is a session guided by the participants.
  8. Facilitator of Family Outreach (FFO): A member of the FFO (Facilitator of Family Outreach) team will be available to answer questions about district and community resources.  
  9. Neighboring Your Multilingual Neighbors: This session will help you learn more about your neighbors, the countries they are from, and how to help both you and your child build relationships with your neighbors to build stronger neighborhoods and communities.

We will be hosting Parent University at Urbandale High School on February 21, 2023. Enter through the west door by the baseball field (map below).

FORMAT
Parent University consists of two sessions. The first session runs from 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. and the second session runs from 7:00 – 7:45 p.m. There are a total of nine topics* to select from for each session. Parents/guardians are able to select one topic they’d like to attend for session one and select a second topic they’d like to attend for session two. Topics will be the same for session one and session two (i.e. the content from a topic in session one will be repeated in session two). Ideas for topics were generated from feedback received in the parent/staff survey as well as by the UCSD School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC). 

*Note: The “Safety and Security Dangerous Apps” topic on February 21 will run 90 minutes. It will be a double session with dedicated time to ask questions.

Our next Parent University will take place on April 18, 2023. Please note: The Parent University night scheduled for April 18, 2023 has been cancelled.
