Social Studies Curriculum

We believe students need a rich education in social sciences to further themselves as 21st Century citizens, and sustain vital democratic foundations and traditions. Through their education, students will develop the ability to “make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.” (National Council for the Social Studies, 3.) With historical awareness and cultural perspectives, students will be able to find their place in the traditions of history.

A rich education in social science is most readily achieved through a learner-centered environment. Learner-centered education is purposeful and rigorous with an emphasis on inquiry, collaboration, personal reflection, and the integration of technology. (Urbandale Community School District Vision for Learning) Learning in the social sciences should encourage participation in civic and community life.
